HOW TO CREATE ILLUSTRATED POETRY

Image
The landscape of poetry is changing. Step aside, sonnets, for what makes great poetry now - is plain unexpectedness. Some poets create surprise through short anecdotes, some through unique formatting on the pages - and the upcoming KREST Publishers release 'Love and Lies' does it through illustrations in combination with the others. Illustrated poetry is not entirely new - in fact, poet Kwanele Sifunda drew inspiration for an illustrated anthology from the modern poets like Rupi Kaur. Here is a rundown of the process it takes to create an illustrated anthology:    PLANNING YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS  Dependent on the amount of time available for the book, the poems may be ordered before choosing illustrations, or the illustrations may be chosen first. 'Love and Lies' had a tight timeline of 10 weeks, meaning there was not a second to spare! The poems to be illustrated were chosen beforehand so that the drawing could be done while editing went on. Self-publishers may not have th...

KREST FAMILY WELCOMES DEBUT POETS

The publishing imprint was formed in March 2020 and has grown to happily provide a catapult for local writers into an industry that is otherwise hard to break into. While the imprint works with many writers who are familiar to the world of words, KREST is always excited to take chances on rising talent.  Having spotted this in two South African Durbanite debuts, KREST Publishers has happily welcomed new poets Kwanele Sifunda and Mervin M. Francis to the family. 'LOVE AND LIES' BY KWANELE SIFUNDA       Sifunda is a passionate 24 year old from Morningside in Durban. WHAT SHOULD YOUR PUBLISHING CONTRACT LEGALLY LOOK LIKE – SOUTH AFRICA

A publishing agreement from a traditional publisher is probably a writer’s biggest dream come true and their worst nightmare, all in one fell swoop. It’s a big deal, honestly, to know that someone out there believes in your talent and wants to get your book off the ground. But it can also be a stressful time for anyone who’s never been through the process before. Copyright lawyers are not the easiest of people to find, and once you’ve sourced one, they’re on the pricey side. So here’s our truthful and transparent run-down of what clauses are actually allowed to be in the contract the publisher gives you. Just a quick disclaimer that this article is based on a traditional publishing contract, whereby the publisher funds the book production and the author earns royalties. Ourselves, we do all 3 publishing models (traditional, hybrid, and self) but we’ve focused on the former here. FIRST AND FOREMOST… Any contract should start out by identifying the parti...

COVER REVEAL!

Image
PAUL ZUNCKEL'S "SECRETS AND LIES" KREST Publishers proudly presents to you the cover of Paul Zunckel's war-set drama-romance, "Secrets and Lies". Book cover design is possibly one of the most exciting steps in the publishing process. It surpasses the stringent rules of editing and the time-consuming task of typesetting. Cover design is a time for publisher and writer to play together. The cover of "Secrets and Lies" is a proud collaborative effort between KREST and Zunckel. Zunckel was asked, in the early days of production, what sort of cover he might like. The fiction novel is an intricately layered story. It traverses multiple years and characters' lives, expertly bouncing back and forth to create a drama epic. Starting off the in late South African seventies, it follows the enrollment of young men into the SADF. Although the story is set across the African continent at a time of war, it is, in fact, a tale far less about the battle...

KREST Publishers, the publishing imprint of digital media and telecommunications company LOCHAN MEDIA PTY LTD, is set to release two books this upcoming winter. The imprint was co-founded by LOCHAN MEDIA and author Keli Hariparsad to give a platform to a more diverse range of genres and stories than previously seen in the South African publishing market. Equally as important as the publishing aspect of the business is its online bookstore, which sells books on behalf of other publishers, self-published authors, and ordinary citizens who want to tidy up their bookshelves. The business prides itself on highly personal service in all parts of its operations. Naturally, being a Durban-based publisher, KREST is excited to announce that two writers from their home-province KZN have been signed on over the lockdown period. Both upcoming books are vastly different and equally special, an excellent representation of KREST’s diverse interest in work that is, above all else, w...
